Look up the company up online to find out what its customers are saying about it, and called the BBB to see if there are any complaints lodged against it.
If you need special services, such some unusually shaped statue or other valuable being packed up for you; if you want all the packing done for you, need packing supplies, or require some other type of help, ask about that upfront.
